The City of Newport is calling for volunteers to participate in a tree-planting initiative aimed at fostering a healthier environment. With four days remaining, individuals interested in contributing do not need to register.
According to a Newport news release, volunteers are encouraged to simply arrive at the designated locations but should wear sturdy shoes and bring water. They may bring their own shovel and gloves or use those provided by the city. Updates regarding any last-minute changes due to weather will be available on ReNewport's Facebook page.
The tree planting events are scheduled as follows: October 19 at 10 a.m. at the Intermediate School; October 25 at 11 a.m. on Columbia Street, with participants meeting at the Intermediate School; November 2 at 10 a.m. at Monmouth and W 11th, meeting at the Campbell County building parking lot; and November 16 at 10 a.m. in the Island Neighborhood, meeting on Beech Street.
Sponsors of this initiative include the City of Newport, ReNewport, and the Westside Citizen's Coalition. Funding is sourced from $1 million in grants provided by the Inflation Reduction Act and the USDA Forest Service, in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.
The news release outlines several benefits associated with increased tree coverage in urban areas: cooler walks and reduced energy bills due to shaded streets; improved air quality; decreased stress levels; lower rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, and depression; enhanced sleep quality leading to better academic performance and creativity; and reduced crime rates in areas with more trees.
