John Hayden has been appointed as the new City Manager of Newport, following an internal search process. He succeeds Tom Fromme, who has served in the role since 2005. Brian Steffen will join him as Assistant City Manager.
Hayden expressed enthusiasm about his new position, stating, “I’ve lived in Newport my whole life, I’ve worked with the city since 2009 and I’m very excited to begin this next chapter in our city’s history.” He added that he is confident in the team's ability to handle upcoming developments and plans for Newport's future.
Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli Jr. praised Hayden's selection: “We are confident that John Hayden brings the leadership, experience, and vision that will continue to guide Newport toward a bright and prosperous future.” The mayor highlighted Hayden's readiness to engage with the community and work collaboratively to maintain Newport as a thriving city.
Tom Fromme also commented on the decision-making process: “It was a difficult choice because we have some very good candidates,” he said. “But I am pleased with the process and the results. It is a new era. And I know John and Brian will keep the city moving forward.”
Hayden has a background in politics and government dating back to his college years when he interned for Kentucky U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. He joined the Newport City Commission in 2008 after defeating a long-serving commissioner. His educational credentials include degrees from Thomas More College and Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
Tom Fromme's tenure saw significant growth for Newport under his leadership roles both as police chief and city manager. Mayor Guidugli acknowledged Fromme’s contributions by saying, “Under Tom Fromme’s steady hand, Newport experienced remarkable growth and progress.”
