The City of Newport has commenced construction on a $16.5 million parking garage located at the former site of the World Peace Bell. The project, which began on Wednesday, is set to provide 405 above-ground parking spaces for public use in downtown Newport. The garage aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for both residents and visitors.
City Manager Tom Fromme emphasized the longstanding need for public parking in Newport, stating, "We have been talking about the need for public parking for over 20 years. This investment addresses that need and also serves as an aid to economic development in our downtown."
Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli Jr. highlighted the significance of this development milestone, saying, "As our city continues to redevelop and attract more businesses, visitors, and residents, it's crucial that we invest in infrastructure that supports that growth." He added that the new structure is designed to blend with Monmouth Street's aesthetics while meeting future needs.
The parking facility is being constructed on a block bordered by Monmouth, York, Fourth, and Fifth streets. This location is also part of a mixed-use project led by hotel operator Shaun Pan. The development will feature two Hilton brand hotels: TRU and Home 2 Suites. Pan also owns a nearby riverfront Hampton Inn & Suites.
Earlier this year, an office building on the two-acre site was demolished to make way for the new construction. The 32-ton World Peace Bell has been relocated to the city's maintenance facility until a permanent location is found.
The new garage is expected to open in late 2025.
