The city of Newport is seeking to employ a full-time social worker to assist the police department by providing crisis intervention, social services, and community outreach.
According to the job description, social workers will offer crisis intervention, short-term counseling, advocacy, community outreach, education, and other services to support both the Newport Police Department and the local community. Essential functions of this role include aiding officers in delivering immediate assistance to individuals in distress, conducting follow-up activities and agency referrals, gathering data through interviews to assess community needs, creating reports based on this data, providing emergency social services including after-hours support, and maintaining accurate records. The ideal candidate must be able to maintain client confidentiality and exercise discretion while attending meetings and performing home visits as needed.
Additional responsibilities involve facilitating social service training for the police department, managing grants, and serving as a liaison within the court system. Desired qualifications include a bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, psychology, or a related field along with two years of experience in the social sciences. A Licensed Social Worker certification is required. Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license, attend continuing education as needed, and be bondable. Familiarity with federal and state laws impacting social services is also necessary.
