At Newport High School, students achieved a college readiness rate of 14% on the math portion of the ACT for the 2023-24 school year, according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

On average, students scored 15.2 in math during the 2023-24 school year, compared to 16.4 in the previous year.

Math proficiency in the school dropped 5% compared to the previous school year, when 19% of students were considered ready for post-secondary education.

For comparison, 30% of students across Kentucky met or exceeded ACT benchmarks in math during 2023-24 school year.

Beyond math, 30% of students Newport High School met the reading college readiness benchmarks in the 2023-24 school year. Additionally, 29% were considered college-ready in English.

Newport High School is located within Newport Independent School District, in which it stood out with the highest ACT performance in math in the 2023-24 school year.

Despite escaping some of the pandemic's educational disruptions, Kentucky's achievement gaps have remained an issue since 2019. In the eighth-grade reading assessments, for example, Hispanic students scored eight points lower than their white peers, and the gap reached 15 points in math. Black students fared even worse, falling more than 20 points behind and facing a failure rate nearly double that of their white counterparts.
