The City of Newport has opened nominations for the 2024 Excellence in Preservation Awards, aimed at recognizing notable achievements in historic preservation within its historic districts. The awards, which began in 1999, honor projects and individuals dedicated to restoring Newport's historic buildings.
The award categories include Exterior Restoration for both Residential and Mixed-Use/Commercial properties, Adaptive Reuse for Residential and Mixed-Use/Commercial purposes, Preservation Craftsman, and Interior Restoration. Additional categories may be added for projects that show exceptional innovation and preservation excellence.
Projects will be evaluated on design sensitivity, execution of best practices, problem-solving abilities, and community impact. Nominees must provide comprehensive background information with their submissions.
Eligible projects must adhere to professional standards of historic preservation principles. All necessary permits and licenses should be obtained, and the property must be compliant with city regulations.
Nominations can be submitted by filling out a form available online. Completed forms along with supporting documents should be delivered or mailed to the City of Newport Historic Preservation Office by February 7, 2025.
Award winners will be celebrated at a ceremony on February 27, 2025. Further details about the event will be announced later.
